Oil Painting on Canvas
During the fall of 2020, I took an oil painting class. Throughout the semester I completed a total of five paintings, each having its own theme.
The first assignment is a black and white still life of five items that played a role during my quarantine experience. The items I chose were a mask, paintbrush, coffee mug, baton, and a pointe shoe. With this being my first time using oil paint and my first time doing a still life painting, I was very nervous about how it would turn out. I am very happy to say that I love the finished result and that it may be my favorite painting from the class.
The second assignment is a monochromatic painting of three body parts. We first chose three body parts and created a photoshop composition of them. Next we set the image to a monochrome setting using any color we wanted, I chose tan. We then painted based off of our created images. This is not my favortie piece but I am still happy with the result. Getting the colors correct was a huge challenge for me, as well as the realism in the hands. My favorite part of this painting is the lips.
The third assignment is a geometric abstraction piece. Before painting, Everyone took a personality quiz to see what color pallet fit them best. I ended up getting the sea glass pallet, which consisted of pastel blues, greens, pinks, and yellows. I knew from the beginning of the assignment that I wanted to do an explosion type design and incorporate strait lines as well as curved lines. I am very happy with how this turned out and along with the first still life piece, this is another favorite.
The fourth assignment is a geometric self portrait with an underpainting. I split the portrait into two sides to not only widen my color palette, but I also wanted it to help portray my feelings when I am with friends compared to when I am alone. The left side with the warmer colors is meant to show when I am with friends or family and personality feels warmer and brighter. The right side with the cooler colors shows the calmness of me being by myself.
The fifth and final assignment could be any style we choose. I chose to do still life based off of a picture with an underpainting. The image I was working off of was an image of my two cats laying on the floor together. I started with the gradient underpainting then started working on adding layers of fur to the cats.
